10 GOURD-GEOUS PUMPKIN CARVING TIPS

ree

Pumpkin season is officially here, and we’re keeping it fun and festive! Whether you’re going for spooky, silly, or showstopper, these easy tips will help your pumpkin shine brighter, last longer, and bring all the fall feels to your front porch.

1. Gourd Hunting 101

Start with a firm pumpkin that feels heavy for its size. Skip any with soft spots, and give it a gentle tap to hear that nice hollow sound. Hold it by the stem to make sure it doesn’t wiggle. That’s your sign of a keeper.

2. Cleanliness Is Next to Gourdliness

Wash the outside with soap and water, then dry it off. Spread out some newspaper to keep cleanup simple. Cut the top at a 45-degree angle so your lid stays put later. Scoop out the insides with a sturdy metal spoon until the walls are about an inch thick.

3. Seeds of Greatness

Don’t toss the guts just yet. Boil the seeds in salted water for 10 minutes, drain, toss with olive oil and salt, and bake at 400°F until golden. Let them cool before snacking. You'll be thankful for the salty snack!

4. Chill Out

A cool pumpkin is easier to handle. Pop it in the fridge for an hour or two before carving to make cutting cleaner and help it last longer.

5. Etch a Pumpkin

Pumpkin tattoos are great shortcuts, but if you’re feeling creative, sketch your design or print a stencil and tape it on. Trace with a marker before you carve so you know exactly where to cut. For extra detail, use a citrus zester for shallow etching to add texture and depth.

6. Cut It Out

For simple, fun shapes, press metal cookie cutters into your pumpkin with a mallet. It’s an easy way to get clean lines, especially for kids or anyone who prefers quick and creative.

7. Pumpkin Picasso

Hate carving? No problem. Paint your pumpkin with personality. It’s easy, less mess, and it keeps looking good long after the jack-o’-lanterns fade.

8. Slice, Slice Baby

A small serrated knife works best. When you hit a corner, pull it out and reinsert for a clean cut. If a piece breaks off, grab a toothpick and use it like a tiny pumpkin bandage. No one will ever know.

9. The Pumpkin Preservation Society

After carving, mist the inside and cut edges with a mix of water and vinegar or lemon juice. It slows down browning and keeps your masterpiece looking good for longer.

10. Glow Up

Before displaying, rub the inside and outside with a touch of vegetable oil to lock in moisture and give your pumpkin that fresh, glossy look. Swap out candles for battery lights or fairy lights for a soft, golden glow that lasts all night.
